A Conference in 18 Squares

Overview

  • Type: Design project
  • Goal: Capturing my conference experience through situated crocheting.

Description

A Conference in 18 Squares is a data crochet exercise developed during DIS2025, using a single skein of color-changing yarn as a way to stitch my conference experience as it unfolded. Every day a different stitch pattern—granny squares loosely encoding moments, moods, and situations as they happened.

A classic granny square on the flight out (no internet, had to remember how to start). A slightly wonky one during our Bring Your Own Biodata workshop (too many distractions). A sunburst for the keynotes—including the closing keynote, which quietly threw off my stitch count (can you spot the mistake).

A freestyle square during Session 2 on Monday as my friend was presenting. A skull square during drinks after the conference. And then softer, puffy comfort stitches when plans changed and I found myself on a different flight home.

All 18 squares now live together in a DIS2025 tote bag.
